CHAPTER ONE: TWAIN, ANYONE?

Facing certain death, all she could think about was reaching out to comfort the hand that was calling out to her. Donna didn't know why she felt the need to touch the hand in the jar. She'd always felt it was a macabre feature of the TARDIS on this journey of hers, but she understood why he kept it safely aboard.

She touched the glass container, just barely, and her whole body seized. She was barely aware of the burning around her. Instead she only knew the burning inside her body as the golden energy she had seen earlier grew and encased her.

Her body shook in time with the hand, not that she knew that consciously. She was hardly aware of anything consciously. Then the hand vibrated more and more until it could not be seen through the glow.

And Donna knew no more.

/=/=/=/

Donna wasn't unconscious for long. She felt something nudge at her mind without touching her body. She slowly pushed herself from prone on her side to kneeling, very slowly as she had a bad headache.

Her eyes widened as she remembered the danger. But suddenly her eyes were drawn to the blue button. Her body moved without her knowledge and she pressed it with her left hand.

The TARDIS whirred and the air began to cool. Donna watched in numb shock as repairs happened before her eyes. The broken windows were repaired, the burning stopped, the smoke cleared and the annoying alarms and flashing lights switched off. “Oh my God, what's happening?”

The Old Girl is fixing what she can.

Donna looked around. “Doctor?!”

No, Donna, I'm right here!

“Right where? I don't see you!”

Oh, for Rassilon's- Oh my God!

Donna would have asked what was wrong except she realized her hands were moving over the controls and her eyes were checking the viewer for information about the repairs. It was all in Gallifreyan, but the way her hands moved... “How the hell did I direct the TARDIS? I only know about flying her!”

A moment of silence. Then the Doctor's voice, numbed with its own patent shock, returned with words that shocked her.

Your hands did it. But I directed them to.

“What?! You're in the bloody-”

Sh-sh-sh! We have to be quiet! No one knows we're here. Silent running. Like on submarines when you can't even drop a spanner.

Donna decided she would respect that. Danger to the universe and all. But she wanted answers, even if she had to be quiet. “Fine. But how can you be here when I last saw you outside of the TARDIS, when I last heard you calling to me?”

Silence for a moment. Then came the answer that she wasn't expecting.

That wasn't me. I was in the TARDIS. I'm now in your head, Donna.

“What?!” she hissed. Her eyes darted to where the jar had been, and she froze. It was broken, the fluid drying all around it. “But... the Hand was right there. I... reached out to it.”

That was me, calling out to you. I've been calling out to you for some time now. Those heartbeats you've been hearing, remember?

“Wait... Yeah, I remember. But how can you be in two places at once? Not even the Doctor can manage that.”

Not as the same person, unless he met himself, but that's not what happened here.

“Then what did happen?”

I was the Hand. I had all of his regeneration energy, but I couldn't use it. I needed more DNA to create a body.

“Is that what happens when you have a spare part that can store an unwanted regeneration?”

Well, he did regenerate, but he didn't let it go all the way. But that's not what I'm getting at. You want to know why I'm talking when he's not around.

“Well, duh. Would be nice to know why I'm feeling like I'm going insane. Because I have to be. Your tone sounds more like me than him.”

Okay. There's a good reason for that. You touched me, and the one thing no one is supposed to do is touch a Time Lord during a regeneration or a severed part that has regeneration energy still in it.

“So what's that going to do to me?”

Um... listen, Donna. Listen your own heartbeat. Or should I say... heartsbeats.

“What?!”

Sh-sh-sh! Just listen!

She did. She put a hand over where her heart had always been. And she gasped. It didn't feel right anymore. Then she placed her hands about where she had on the Doctor's chest when he had lost Jenny.

There was a heart beating under each hand.

Donna fell into the Jump Seat. “How...?!”

Instead of forming a separate body, I fused into yours. We're now like conjoined twins, only more like the vanished variety. Which may feel a little crowded, but with a Time Lord brain there's enough room for both sets of memories. Although it does mean you'll never be able to go to any Earth physicians ever again unless you want to risk people wanting to section you right and left.

Each word sank in, but only the implication made an impression. “I'm... now a Time... Lady?!”

Well... yes. Mostly because you inherited the training from his memories.

“And you're... inside my mind.”

Yeah, and we have to inhabit the same body and mind. This could get awkward.

“Awkward?! There's a girl who killed me to get back to the Doctor on the loose, and he and that nice gay fellow – well, except for not hugging me he was nice – are trapped on the Crucible with her!”

Jack isn't exactly gay. If you can now remember what Rose did to you, then you have access to more things.

She blinked until she had a random thought. “Wait... Jack's a Boe-Kind who was made immortal because Rose ripped the TARDIS open without the Old Girl's consent?”

See? You now have both your memories and the Doctor's.

“And a tag-along head-mate.”

He snorted. Head-mate. I like that. Fitting. He promptly sobered. Well, I'll try to not take over without asking first. But please let me live through you once we've figured out this mess.

“How is my one body going to solve this? I'm nothing special!”

But you are... Oh... oh you really believe that? I can see in your memories-

“Don't you repeat any of that!” she hissed, rubbing her head. “It was bad enough to hear the Doctor say it.”

He didn't mean it. He regrets it. And think about all you've done! You helped him save a million people from the Adipose pills, helped save the Earth while sharing his burden of causing the destruction of Pompeii, freed the Ood, went solo against the Sontarans, helped stop a war, saved Agatha Christie, and so much more! If you don't want to listen to me, fine. Just look at the memories of you from his mind starting from the time you met. And those that came after.

Reluctantly she did. And gasped in shock. She saw herself as someone who kept surprising the Doctor, delighting him with her thinking and her caring nature hidden under a brash exterior meant to keep those who never really cared at bay. Only it presented a barrier to his own wishes. She felt a growing fondness beginning before that soft smile after he biodamped her, a sense that he was feeling destiny knocking on his door.

That alone rendered her wide eyed, but the memories that followed left her in no shadow of a doubt. “He... loves me,” she breathed. “Not Rose. Even then... he was falling for me.”

He never loved Rose. Not in that way. Well, he loved all of his companions, but he knew nothing of the romantic type love until first Sarah Jane, and then you.

Donna frowned as memories of Rose's face on someone who was not Rose hit her thoughts. It took her a few seconds to place a name to that girl who appeared with the regeneration that the Doctor never spoke of. “Why can't he remember The Moment?”

Time-locked event combined with a Time Crash. With three of him there he couldn't remember or history would have changed drastically.

She paused to consider that. It would explain a lot. That weapon was far too manipulative. No wonder she had been locked away, and no wonder the Doctor felt the need to remove her from the Time Lords' grasp. “Shouldn't the one before the one I know have been there? You know, the one with the leather jacket that you sound like at times?”

There was a long pause as her twin reflected on the question. Yes, he should have. I don't know what kept him away. More meddling from The Moment, I think.

Their joint attention was shifted to the beeping console. Donna rushed to the screen and let the readings flash before her eyes. “Okay, Space Twin, what's this all about?”

She could feel the other pretense in her mind now, just hovering around her own awareness. She thought it should feel a bit crowded in her head, but she realized that Time Lord brains really were so much bigger on the inside. God, was that going to be his explanation for everything? Or worse, her explanation now?

Could be worse.

“Oh? How so?”

Well, you could... What the hell...?

Donna knew right away that he was not referring to their shared situation, but to the increasing energy readings. Knowledge flew through her mind, the Doctor's memories reacting to what her eyes were seeing. “What are the Daleks trying to do?”

Within moments they had their answer. The Daleks were using particles Donna had never heard of for a test run of the deadliest weapon in existence: a bomb that would destroy reality.

It took longer than she liked to find her voice. She lacked any prompting from her head-mate as he too was in shock. “So what do we do?”

There was another pause. Then she could almost feel her twin sigh in her mind.

If you'll let me take over, I can explain as I put together what may be our only hope.

For once she was more freaked out by the events outside than the thought of letting someone take over her body. So she nodded. “What do I have to do?”

Relax, and I'll move our body to put together an inversion catalyser.

Donna's eyes widened. “You're counting on all the Daleks coming from Davros' DNA. You're going to set the Reality Bomb on them!”

Biggest backfire in history!

She exhaled. “Okay. Do it.”

It was the strangest sensation, feeling her body move without controlling any of it. Oh, she knew that once you learned a certain level of motor function your brain took care of your movements without your being aware of deciding to act. But there was always the knowledge that you controlled it, even if you couldn't place when you made the decision to act. This felt like she was watching a movie through a special futuristic virtual reality that even made you feel like your body was really moving, and yet she had zero influence as her hands opened a bin under a section of the grating and pulled out all sorts of equipment. She felt like a puppet.

She hoped this gun her twin was fashioning worked. What if Davros shot them?

Ooh... Good point. Well, I guess I'll have to fire from the safety of the TARDIS.

She startled, but had to mentally laugh. If they shared a body, then they might be able to hear each other's thoughts. Still, she managed to exert enough control to speak her next thoughts. “But would the Doctor want to kill the Daleks? I mean, he tried to save some of them, right? He said something about trying to save Davros from the Nightmare Child. Would he really want them all dead? And he tried to save Dalek Caan when he found the Cult of Skaro.”

Hmm... Well, what if I altered the weapon to stun Davros and any Dalek that has his DNA? It'll buy us enough time to disable the Reality Bomb, and then we can send the planets back. Then send the Daleks into the Void.

Donna sighed in relief. “I think he'll approve. There's been enough death today. All right, Space Twin. Let's finish this weapon and get on with saving Reality!”

Her twin laughed in delight in her mind.

I guess "awkward" is the perfect word to describe this situation. The Doctor and Donna in one head? This could be great :D
Looking forward to the next parts!

Yep. :)

And I got your emails. Am thinking about what to rec, and trying to complete some fics right now before beta reading again. We'll see if this one will finish in a timely manner.

Okay! I won't need the literature until the end of the year so there's no rush ;)

Good, 'cause I need to think hard. Didn't realize my reading breadth wasn't as extensive as I'd thought. Or else I've read far too many books depending on your point of view. :)

Well, it certainly is more awkward than seeing TenII naked. All of her memories and thoughts forced to be shared.

I can't wait for what comes next!

Only there's no time to blush. The second presence in a body would hamper that. :)

Will work on it later. Have a lot to do today to prepare for a busy week. :)

Ooh, I'm liking these changes already. Now she can accommodate the additional memories and thoughts, and found out some astounding information about how the Doctor really feels. Keep this going! I want to see Donna confronting the Doctor about this.

Nice compromise, Donna just added that little bit of human thought into the equation to allow the other to realize what the Doctor would think of genocide.

I agree, this is even more awkward than the canon! Sharing minds/thoughts/feelings/Donna's body, not really being able to hide anywhere. Brilliant, but very awkward indeed!

I do seem to recall a story somewhere where Donna, after having her mind "wiped," goes to a museum with friends and they come across an exhibit of Pompeii. Donna begins to remember, the Doctor comes to rescue her, and Donna comes up with a unique solution... let's just say, poor Doctor! The results could be hilarious.

I was asking my beta for help with one story and this idea popped out as a possible ending. I decided it was worthy of its own story as I doubt it's ever been done before.

Well, I felt that if Donna knew about everything she'd also know the Doctor wouldn't want genocide. So that takes care of exile risks. :)

Yep. New definition of "awkward". :D

I think I know which one you mean. It's on FFN, right? Yeah, poor Doctor. Although he kinda deserved it if you think about it. :P

No, I don't think it has. The idea that they were two parts of a whole and that each needed the other has been put out there, but never done quite like this. It's unique and quite fun, even if it is embarrassing and awkward. It's like talking to oneself!

Yes, it's on FFN, and the Doctor certainly deserved it! Donna is always one to give the Doctor exactly what he deserves.

This is interesting. :D The really interesting part might be if Donna has to talk aloud to Ten II. That would be hard to explain...

I really cannot wait to see Rose's reaction. *is hopeful for a slap that Donna delivers but is controlled by Ten II* * evil cackle* Donna could totally say "Wasn't me." *snort*

Loved it.

I suppose you'll enjoy the second chapter then. ;)

Well... remember that the Doctor tends to be a gentleman. Ten II would have to be beyond angry to take over Donna's hand like that. Will see what the revisions tell me to do.

Welcome. :D

I have read a lot of JE re-writes, but never one that took this angle. Can't wait for chapter 2!

Interesting take on the Meta-Crisis. I'm a little curious as to where the second heart went to, if the Hand had two heartbeats and now Donna (who had one of her own) has two. Seems to me there's a third one missing.

I was happy to see Donna finally getting to see herself as the Doctor sees her and to know that she is loved.

"Space Twin". *giggle*

When the MetaCrisis originally formed, the energy took the second heart and made it energy within Donna. Here the sum total of it all entering Donna forces a regeneration WITH extras. Let's just say the "second" heart appears in an odd way.

At last, right?

What about "Head-Mate"? :D

In my absence I seem to have totally missed out on this one! Ooooh, terrific concept. I can hardly wait to skip forward and see what you've done with it.

It's okay. Isn't it a great concept? You can blame TM entirely for it even existing, and thank Moley for the third chapter. :DDDDDDD
